Mausoleum of Berdykozha batyr

The monument is located on the high bank (floodplain terrace) steppe river Dagandely (70 meters). This steppe landscape, cut by numerous dirt roads mausoleum once dominated the plains and was visible for many miles.

The mausoleum was built of mud brick (8-9 x 23 x35 cm) on the clay mortar, clay for bricks was taken right there – traces the pits, where it was prepared for the desired consistency, and the remains of the well from which water was taken (in50 metersnorth-west of the mausoleum).

Currently the mausoleum is ruined (only swollen residues of one wall and angular construction partially remain). However, with the help of these residues, as well as by using the analog material the graphic reconstruction of the mausoleum has been produced.

The mausoleum refers to the dome-centric type. The square base of the mausoleum was covered by the dome of parabolic shape, assembled by gradual overlapped masonry. Due to such a construction technique of masonry, characterising the Kazakh steppe sites, a high dome was reached. Probably, entrance aperture was arranged in the middle of the north-west wall, because, so it was directed towards the river valley, and the road, which apparently was mastered long ago (at least, in the Middle Ages). This aperture, perhaps, like the dome, was made by overlapped masonry, and the outline of the arch had parabolic (close to the lancet) contours. There were two or four triangular holes arranged in pairs in the dome (on longitudinal and transverse axes), while there probably was the spire at the upper part, topped with a crescent (although spires and crescents were set very rare at the early steppe mausoleums of 18 – the beginning of 19th centuries).

The architecture of interior had a feature based on the fact that two arched niches were arranged into the bottom of each wall; perhaps, there were similar niches in the wall with the entrance aperture. Chamber of the mausoleum, according to similar mausoleums in neighbourhood, was probably covered with a layer of coating (partially extruded during masonry works) and whitewashed.

The rounded corners of foundation are compositional features of the mausoleum – such technique is more typical for no-dome mausoleum Sary-Arka, and for relatively early Kazakh monuments of the 18th century (e.g. Karmakchi-ata mausoleum in Zhusaly village, Kyzylorda region).

Presumably mausoleum could have following dimensions: the square was 7.0×7.0 meters(the length of retaining wall is 6.4 meters), the height could be 7-8 meters.

The mausoleum of Berdykozha batyr is significant for the history of the Kazakh architecture as adobe monuments firmly dated to the 18th century on theterritoryofKazakhstanis uncommon. Furthermore, during this period domed mausoleums were constructed extremely rare (in contrast to the Medieval period and the late 19th – early 20th centuries) and, therefore, they were role models for later mausoleums. In all likelihood, the mausoleum of Berdykozha batyr could be such model for local monuments.
